On Saturday (May 17), Lizzo shared a teaser on Instagram of a new track she’s working on— however, her choice of venue sparked a flurry of conversation online.
The short clip begins with Lizzo posed in Times Square in front of the now-viral statue of a plus-sized Black woman. Right before she previews her track, audio from Katt Williams’s 2024 Woke special begins playing: “They came after Lizzo and she is unproblematic… it’s a line. You can be fat, you can be Black, [but] you can’t be no fat, Black, b*tch.”
The Controversial Piece Is Part Of A Series Called ‘Grounded In The Stars’
The sculpture was unveiled earlier this month in Times Square and has since received an onslaught of criticism from MAGA supporters. Many claim that it perpetuates certain stereotypes of Black women. The statue, which was curated by artist Thomas J. Price, is part of a series called “Grounded in the Stars.”
The artist told Artnet that the series was meant to “instigate meaningful connections and bind intimate emotional states that allow for deeper reflection around the human condition and greater cultural diversity.”
“The work is a composite fictional character, unfixed and boundless, allowing us to imagine what it would be like to inhabit space neutrally without preconceived ideas and misrepresentation,” he added.
The singer has a long documented history of addressing the controversy surrounding her weight and opening up about her health journey. Earlier this year, Lizzo revealed she finally reached her “goal weight.”
In a post shared to Instagram in Janurary, the “Special” singer looked slimmer than ever in an athleisure-inspired two-piece, likely from her Yitty, shapewear company. “I did it,” she wrote in the post’s caption. “Today when I stepped on my scale, I reached my weight release goal. I haven’t seen this number since 2014! Let this be a reminder you can do anything you put your mind to. Time for new goals!”
