Mariah Carey is one step closer to being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The legendary singer/songwriter is among the 2025 nominees who are eligible for enshrinement. Along with Carey, Outkast, Chubby Checker, Cyndi Lauper, Phish, The Black Crowes, and Oasis. Also, Soundgarden, Billy Idol, Maná, Joe Cocker, and Joy Division/New Order.
An acclaimed songstress of the highest order with a five-octave vocal range, Carey is one of the greatest singers ever. Among her many accolades is selling over 220 million records worldwide and she holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist (19), a female songwriter (18), and a female producer (15). Additionally, Carey was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and has won 5 Grammy Awards and a Grammy Global Impact Award, 10 American Music Awards, and 20 Billboard Music Awards.
Debuting in 1994 with Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, Outkast are trailblazers of the Atlanta rap scene and are regarded as one of the best rap acts of all time. Their double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003), won Album of the Year at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards.
According to eligibility requirements, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before they’re eligible for induction.
More than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals will be voting on the finalists. The selection criteria include “an artist’s impact on other musicians, the scope and longevity of their career and body of work, as well as their innovation and excellence in style and technique.”
Other nominees will be announced and will be installed by the select committee, in the Musical Influence, Musical Excellence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award areas.
The induction ceremony is slated to take place in Los Angeles this fall.
