Lil Wayne’s Top 5 Rappers: Drake In, Kendrick Out—Surprising Choice? https://www.hot97.com/news/lil-waynes-top-5-rappers-drake-in-kendrick-out-surprising-choice/ Fri, 28 Jun 2024 17:35:27 +0000 The rivalry between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has stirred curiosity about where other artists stand. Despite Kendrick’s aggressive diss tracks like “Euphoria” and “Not Like Us,” Lil Wayne recently shared his top five rappers in an interview, which notably excluded Kendrick but included Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Eminem, The Notorious B.I.G., and Drake.

Lil Wayne’s decision not to include Kendrick in his top five rappers list isn’t entirely unexpected, given his longstanding friendship with Drake. This choice carries weight, especially amidst their ongoing feud. Fans have been particularly interested in Lil Wayne’s stance after Kendrick mentioned him in “Not Like Us,” referencing allegations about Drake and Lil Wayne’s girlfriend during Lil Wayne’s time behind bars, along with his tattoo tribute to Weezy. Lil Wayne indirectly confirmed the incident in a surfaced interview but appeared unperturbed by the controversy.

Speculation arose when a clip from a Lil Wayne concert showed Kendrick’s track playing, leading some to speculate on Lil Wayne’s stance. However, it was clarified that this was merely a DJ’s introduction and not Lil Wayne’s endorsement. This incident underscores the intrigue surrounding Lil Wayne’s position regarding the Drake-Kendrick feud and his allegiance to Drake.

What are your thoughts on Lil Wayne’s exclusion of Kendrick from his top five list, opting instead to include Drake? Are you surprised by his choices? Where do you think Lil Wayne stands in the ongoing rivalry between Drake and Kendrick?

Lil Wayne reveals disappointment about Super Bowl halftime show

“It was ripped away from me,” Lil Wayne tells a crowd of his fellow New Orleanians during his annual Weezyana Fest. In September, Kendrick Lamar was chosen to headline the Super Bowl Halftime performance. The decision was met with an onslaught of criticism especially from Lil Wayne’s Young Money/Cash Money family members Nicki Minaj and Birdman. Wayne did admit to feeling “hurt” by the decision, but his latest comments indicate that this hurt runs deep.

That said, witnessing the festival’s turnout gave him something that the Super Bowl cannot. “I worked my a** off to get in that position…” Lil Wayne tells the crowd. “But this motherf*king moment right here? They can’t take that.” While many people like Nicki Minaj and Birdman, spoke out about the decision to select Kendrick Lamar as the Super Bowl Halftime performer; many came to his aid, like Rihanna. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the singer says she believes Kendrick Lamar’s selection was fate, almost “meant to be.” She added, “It’s Kendrick Lamar! Kendrick Lamar is the one to do it right now. He’s gonna crush it.”

Lil Wayne Accuses Kansas City Chiefs Of Cheating, Travis Kelce Responds https://www.hot97.com/news/lil-wayne-accuses-kansas-city-chiefs-of-cheating-travis-kelce-responds/ https://www.hot97.com/news/lil-wayne-accuses-kansas-city-chiefs-of-cheating-travis-kelce-responds/#respond Sat, 25 Jan 2025 22:03:12 +0000 In Lil Wayne’s opinion, there’s only one reason why the Kansas City Chiefs bested the Houston Texans in a recent game: cheating. “I hate the cheating azz chiefs,” Lil Wayne posted on X Jan. 18. He followed up with another post, writing, “It’s not even impressive when u cheat and then clearly try to cheat … Just win baby.” However, Chiefs’ tight end, Travis Kelce respectfully disagrees.

The NFL star spoke candidly with his brother Jason about the situation, on their New Heights podcast. The football player says that Wayne’s comments didn’t bother him, which makes sense, considering he’s a huge fan of the New Orleans native. In 2024, the rapper performed at the athlete’s Kelce Jam. “I’m sure you saw some of this, but [people] were complaining about the refs again, Trav,” Jason says to Travis. “Even Lil Wayne,” he added to which Travis responded with a laugh, “Shout out to Tunechi, man.”

Snoop Dogg Addresses Lil Wayne’s Response To Super Bowl Snub https://www.hot97.com/news/snoop-dogg-addresses-lil-waynes-response-to-super-bowl-snub/ https://www.hot97.com/news/snoop-dogg-addresses-lil-waynes-response-to-super-bowl-snub/#respond Sat, 07 Dec 2024 19:55:01 +0000 In the latest episode of Drink Champs, the hosts were joined by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Throughout the episode, the pair discussed their decades-long partnership and the music that followed. However, one part stood out: Snoop Dogg seemingly addressed the controversial choice of having Kendrick Lamar perform in New Orleans—which happens to be Lil Wayne’s hometown. He believes hip-hop artists should be “honored” that the art form is being shared among a wider audience. “Before Jay-Z got a hold of the Super Bowl, wasn’t no n*ggas performing,” Snoop said.

“He’s creating a wave of artists to have an opportunity to perform. If you’re a good artist and a great artist, then your time will come.” He continues: “I was never crying about it, or mad about it…when Dr.Dre called me and asked me to get his back, I was there for him. But I didn’t feel I was supposed to or demand to be there.” Snoop Dogg adds, “This is a big event. People [are] looking at everything when they pick the person to perform. You should just be honored that Hip-Hop is being able to be seen on that platform for all of us and not hate on the next man, but be happy.”

Lil Wayne Believes Super Bowl Was ‘Ripped Away’ From Him

In September, Kendrick Lamar was chosen to headline the Super Bowl Halftime performance. The decision was met with criticism, especially from Lil Wayne’s Young Money/Cash Money family members Nicki Minaj and Birdman. Although Lil Wayne did admit to feeling “hurt” by the decision weeks earlier, his latest comments indicated that the hurt runs deep. That said, witnessing the festival’s turnout gave him something that the Super Bowl cannot. “I worked my a** off to get in that position, and it was ripped away from me,” Lil Wayne tells the crowd. “But this motherf*king moment right here? Lil Wayne’s Old Lyric Notebook Listed For $5M https://www.hot97.com/news/lil-waynes-old-lyric-notebook-listed-for-5m/ Sun, 04 Aug 2024 21:46:49 +0000 Lil Wayne has long solidified himself as a G.O.A.T. in hip hop. So it’s no surprise that an old notebook filled with lyrics from his early rapping days is on sale for $5,000,000. According to TMZ, the notebook is from the early 90s and was initially listed at $250,000. However, the company behind the sale, Moments in Time, defended the price increase, noting Wayne’s legendary status. “‘We on Fire'” is the lead single from The Hot Boys’ album Guerrilla Warfare,” the website reads.

“The original version, which appeared on Hot Boys’ The Guerrilla Warfare version features B.G. ‘We on Fire’ was the turning point in 1999 which made the world recognize the true sound of a group known as ‘HotBoys.'” The post continues: “This was the 2nd Single for the ‘HotBoys’ but the 1st to put them on the map. Written & recorded in 1998 while on tour. Lil Wayne was 15 years old and his whole world changed after this song was recorded making it his most significant song.”

Lil Wayne Scores Double Residency In Vegas

The news is surprising because the company had a difficult dispute with Wanye about its initial 2019 release. However, Moments in Time won their bitter legal battle and proceeded with selling the project as they wished. On a happier note, Lil Wayne scored his first-ever dual residency in June. The New Orleans native is expected to dazzle audiences at the Zouk Nightclub and Drai’s Beachclub & Nightclub.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Lil Wayne to Zouk Las Vegas. His dynamic performances and legendary status make him the perfect artist to launch this transformative residency, said Joe Lopez, Vice President of Zouk, in a statement. “We look forward to providing an unparalleled nightlife experience for all to enjoy this monumental artist. Dustin Drai, President of Drai’s Management Group, told  Baller Alert that they were excited to extend their partnership with Weezy. “We cannot wait to continue our longstanding relationship with Lil Wayne and have him return as a resident artist at Drai’s. We could not align with a more dynamic artist to welcome this debut residency partnership.”

Lil Wayne Confirms Absence From Super Bowl LIX https://www.hot97.com/news/lil-wayne-confirms-absence-from-super-bowl-lix/ https://www.hot97.com/news/lil-wayne-confirms-absence-from-super-bowl-lix/#respond Tue, 04 Feb 2025 22:38:01 +0000 Lil Wayne confirms that he will be absent from Super Bowl LIX, despite the big game taking place in his hometown of New Orleans. The rapper announced it on Instagram Stories. He gave a shout-out to The Big Easy and hinted that someone would need to fill his seat at the event.

Wayne shut down any rumors that he would make a surprise appearance during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show, something fans had long speculated. Instead, he reassured his followers by saying, “I got something exciting coming for you… Till then, I’m just chillin’.” He also teased a special surprise on Thursday, February 6, encouraging fans to stay tuned for what’s next.

Kendrick Lamar was chosen as the 2025 Super Bowl halftime performer, but his selection sparked mixed reactions in the Hip Hop community. Many felt Lil Wayne, a New Orleans native, had been overlooked by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, which produces the show. Fans hoped for a Kendrick-Lil Wayne collaboration, especially since they have a track together, “Mona Lisa.”

SZA is the only confirmed guest for Kendrick’s performance. The rest of the setlist remains a closely guarded secret. Although Wayne won’t be part of the Super Bowl stage, fans can expect something major from him soon.

However, comedian Gary Owens didn’t seem too impressed. The Think Like A Man star recently shared his thoughts on Lamar’s “wacced out murals,” where he calls out white comedians for commenting on Black women.

“Make Katt Williams and them proud, the truth ’bout to get loud,” Lamar raps on the track. “No juice inside of my cup, I sober up and knock ’em all off/
Don’t let no white comedian talk about no Black woman, that’s law.”
However, Gary Owens doesn’t see it that way, writing in an Instagram post, “If that’s the law that makes me a criminal.”

Lil Wayne Responds To ‘Wacced Out Murals’

FERG Predicts Kendrick Lamar Will Bring Out Lil Wayne At Super Bowl LIX https://www.hot97.com/news/ferg-predicts-kendrick-lamar-will-bring-out-lil-wayne-at-super-bowl-lix/ https://www.hot97.com/news/ferg-predicts-kendrick-lamar-will-bring-out-lil-wayne-at-super-bowl-lix/#respond Thu, 26 Sep 2024 14:10:55 +0000 FERG, formerly ASAP Ferg, predicts Kendrick Lamar will bring out Lil Wayne during his upcoming Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show performance.

In a new Goat Talk conversation released on Wednesday (Sept. 25), the Harlem native shared his prediction in a new interview with NBA Champ and new recording artist Jaylen Brown who just collaborated with FERG on their new single “Just Do It.” News about Kendrick Lamar being selected as the performer over hometown legend, Lil Wayne, has run rampant since the announcement. They revealed their predictions as the news spread.

“I think they missed the mark by not including Lil Wayne,” Brown remarked. FERG, known for his Harlem roots and hits like “Plain Jane,” responded, “Knowing Kendrick, he’s definitely going to bring Wayne out. He has to. It wouldn’t make sense otherwise. Mark my words—Wayne’s coming.”

A consistent theory about the upcoming Halftime Show is the beef between Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake. Earlier in their discussion, Brown and FERG touched on the longstanding rap rivalry between Kendrick Lamar and Drake.

“I enjoyed the Kendrick vs. Drake feud. I was on the edge of my seat. But I think it’s over now,” Brown, the Boston Celtics shooting guard, commented. “It doesn’t have to be, but what else is left to say? Lines have already been crossed.”

Speculation has been swirling, with artists like Fivio Foreign suggesting that Kendrick bringing Lil Wayne onstage could be the perfect moment to squash any lingering tension between Wayne and Drake. Super Bowl LIX is set for February 9, 2025, in New Orleans—Lil Wayne’s hometown—so fans will have to wait and see.

Adding another layer to the conversation is ASAP Rocky, FERG’s collaborator on tracks like “Shabba.” Rocky stirred the pot with a guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Show of Hands,” where he took shots at Drake, referencing his relationship with his son’s mother and critiquing Drake’s recent album, For All The Dogs

Despite the pointed lyrics, Rocky downplayed any serious beef. “There’s real beef out there,” he told Billboard. “This little back-and-forth is nothing.”

Rihanna Defends Kendrick Lamar Being Super Bowl Halftime Performer

While many people like Nicki Minaj and Birdman, spoke out about the decision to select Kendrick Lamar as the Super Bowl Halftime performer; many came to his aid, like Rihanna. Rihanna doesn’t doubt that Lamar will be able to stun the crowd and those at home with his performance: “We should never doubt him. He’s an amazing artist, top-tier. He had an incredible year,” she said. “He actually brought so many people together. It’s to be celebrated. That’s what culture is. He deserves it. I cannot wait to see it. Kendrick, thank you.”
