Spike Lee is celebrating A$AP Rocky after being acquitted of felony assault on Tuesday, (February 18).
The Oscar-winning filmmaker took to social media and lauded the jury that freed the Harlem rapper.
“Good Morning, Thanks To The Judge And Jury For The NOT GUILTY VERDICT,” Lee began.
He then went on to praise Rocky’s performance in his latest film Highest 2 Lowest that the raper and Denzel Washington star in. In the film, Rocky happens to play a character who is on trial.
“A$AP AND DENZEL WASHINGTON ARE [multiple fire emojis] IN HIGHEST 2 LOWEST.”
“DA New SPIKE LEE JOINT THIS SUMMER. AND DAT’S DA “40 ACRES AND A MULE” TRUTH, RUTH, YA DIG? SHO-NUFF,” he continued.
Rocky was accused of shooting a semi-automatic handgun at A$AP Relli in an altercation in November 2021 and had two charges of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm dismissed. Rocky’s attorneys argued that the prop was a starter pistol that never held real ammunition.
Before the verdict was announced at Los Angeles’ Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, “each jury member agreed the outcome was their individual true and correct verdict.”
After the verdict was ready, Rocky jumped over the stand to Rihanna, his mother, and his sister.
“Thank y’all for saving my life. Thank y’all for making the right decision,” Rocky said as he was filled with emotion.
The judge also thanked the jury for their time.
“We cannot have jury trials without folks like you,” Judge Mark Arnold added.
