SZA is closing out 2024 on a high note, with her album SOS reigning as the No. 1 project in the country. But on Monday, the R&B powerhouse shifted her focus to a vocal segment of her fanbase, often fixated on her body image.

The conversation sparked when a fan page shared a nostalgic clip of SZA during the 2020 quarantine. In the comments, another user mentioned her Brazilian butt lift (BBL) surgery and weight gain, prompting a candid response from the singer. SZA revealed that the pandemic was a deeply challenging time for her.

Losing her grandmother to COVID-19 and battling depression left lasting scars, making insensitive remarks about her body even harder to bear. These comments, she admitted, have caused her to withdraw from her fanbase, despite their unwavering support.

As SZA navigates her personal and professional life, she’s been taking steps to protect her peace. This includes tightening her inner circle and even changing her phone number.

Still, not all relationships have suffered—she recently reconciled with TDE President Terrence “Punch” Henderson after a minor dispute. The deluxe version of SOS, fittingly titled Lana, remains a dominant force on the charts, showcasing her resilience.

Celebrating her 35th birthday this year, SZA reflected on her decision to undergo BBL surgery, a topic she first addressed on her hit album. In a Vogue UK cover story, she spoke with unfiltered honesty, calling the procedure unnecessary.

“I’m so mad I did that s***,” she confessed. “I gained all this weight from being immobile while recovering and trying to preserve the fat. It was just so stupid.”

However, SZA’s perspective remains grounded. She acknowledges her appreciation for the results, saying, “I love my butt. Don’t get me wrong. My booty looks nice. And I’m grateful it looks pretty much… I don’t know, sometimes natural. But I don’t even care. It’s something I wanted, and I’m enjoying it. I love shaking it.”

Her vulnerability echoes sentiments shared by other artists, like Latto, who recently urged fans to consider fitness over surgery. SZA, too, has embraced body positivity while remaining open about the complexities of her journey.

Kendrick Lamar, a longtime collaborator and friend, praised SZA’s emotional depth and artistry. “

Her vulnerability through her music is brave and inspiring,” he told Vogue. “She’s a reminder of what the human experience looks like: a roller-coaster of emotions. And that’s OK. We are alive.”

Through it all, SZA continues to redefine success on her own terms, embracing both the highs and lows with unflinching honesty.
