Voletta Wallace, the mother of hip-hop legend The Notorious B.I.G., has passed away. TMZ reports that she died Friday morning in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, at the age of 72. According to Monroe County Coroner Thomas Yanac, she was in hospice care, and her death was due to natural causes.

Following the tragic murder of her son, Christopher Wallace, in 1997, Voletta took charge of his estate, ensuring his wealth was passed down to his family, including his daughter, T’yanna Wallace. Under her management, Biggie’s estate grew tremendously—from an estimated $10 million at the time of his death to a staggering $160 million today.

Voletta was deeply involved in preserving her son’s legacy. She proudly celebrated his 2020 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and regularly used her Instagram to highlight his continued impact. Her posts featured updates on the Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation, his streaming milestones, tribute concerts, and pop culture moments referencing Biggie.

In 2009, when Notorious, a biopic about Biggie’s life, hit theaters, Voletta spoke on the importance of sharing his story with the world.

Her son, known for his storytelling and influence in hip-hop, was shot and killed in Los Angeles in 1997, just months after the murder of his rap rival, Tupac Shakur.
