Yaya Mayweather, daughter of boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, has had an on-and-off relationship with NBA YoungBoy since 2018. The couple shares a son, Kentrell Gaulden Jr., born in 2020. Despite past legal issues and a complex relationship history, this grand gesture indicates a moment of goodwill between the two.

As previously reported, NBA YoungBoy has been released from prison. The rapper was previously arrested on charges of prescription drug fraud, identity theft, and weapons possession, allegedly involving 15 pharmacies in Cache County.

NBA YoungBoy has received a presidential pardon from President Donald Trump.

On Wednesday (March 28), YoungBoy, along with eight others, including real estate entrepreneurs Todd and Julie Chrisley and Michael Grimm, a former GOP Congressman, were granted clemency.

In a statement, YoungBoy expressed his gratitude for being pardoned.

“I want to thank President Trump for granting me a pardon and giving me the opportunity to keep building – as a man, as a father, and as an artist,” YoungBoy said in a statement shared to social media. “This moment means a lot. It opens the door to a future I’ve worked hard for and I am fully prepared to step into this.”

“Big thanks to the Pardon Czar, Ms. Alice Marie Johnson, for fighting for second chances for so many people, and to my lawyer, Brittany K. Barnett, for being in my corner and all your hard work to make this possible,” his statement continued. “And thank you to everyone who believed in me.”

Throughout his career, YoungBoy has faced constant legal troubles, including firearms charges and house arrest. Even while dealing with legal issues, the Baton Rouge rapper has dropped several albums and mixtapes while serving time in prison.

Youngboy’s pardon comes in just as his upcoming 27-city concert run, which begins on September 2 in Dallas, is called the Make America Smile Again (MASA) .

On Monday (August 19), the 24-year-old recording artist, real name Kentrell Gaulden, was charged in U.S. District Court in Utah with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

NBA Youngboy is accused of possessing a semi-automatic pistol as a convicted felon, according to court documents. The weapon was found on April 16, when Gaulden was arrested on numerous state charges related to his alleged involvement in a prescription drug ring. A search of his Utah home was conducted by multiple agencies during that arrest.

Last week, Youngboy pled guilty to his 2020 Louisiana gun case and agreed to have his case moved to Utah. In addition to firearm possession, he faces drug fraud charges.

According to the affidavit, it is alleged that the rap star was involved in a drug fraud scheme. Youngboy is accused of impersonating a doctor. It reads: 

“A suspect calls in a prescription, claiming the identity of a real doctor and using a fraudulent patient name and birthday, all for Promethazine with Codeine. Sometime after the prescriptions are called in, they are filled and picked up by [YoungBoy and/or people referred to as ‘Known Associates’ 1 and 2].” 

NBA Youngboy previously faced 63 charges, including identity fraud, obtaining a prescription under false pretenses, and forgery. He also faces charges related to possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, engaging in a pattern of unlawful activity, and possession of a controlled substance.

After pleading guilty, Youngboy could face up to 10 years in prison. He is best known for his hit songs such as “38 Baby,” “Outside Today” and Tyler, The Creator’s song, “Wusyaname.” That collaboration earned them a Grammy nomination in 2022 for Best Melodic Rap Performance.

According to DJ Akademiks and publicly available court and prison records, the Baton Rouge rapper is no longer behind bars. Though details remain scarce, speculation suggests he may have been transferred to a halfway house or sent directly home.

This development contradicts previous reports that projected his release for April 26, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his legal status. Until official confirmation emerges, the circumstances of his release remain unclear.

The news comes amid ongoing discussions about NBA YoungBoy’s legal troubles, which involve charges related to prescription fraud, probation violations, and firearms possession. While his legal battles have dominated headlines, his music continues to fuel his momentum. Just days before reports of his release surfaced, he dropped More Leaks, a mixtape compiling fan-favorite snippets and previously unreleased tracks. DJ Akademiks, who first reported the news, also hinted at upcoming music from some of hip-hop’s biggest names. Speaking at an Adin Ross boxing event, he mentioned that Drake, Lil Durk, and YoungBoy all have new material on the way. While it’s unclear whether he was referring to the rapper’s legal status or upcoming releases, the timing suggests YoungBoy may soon be back in the studio.

Despite his legal troubles, NBA YoungBoy’s influence in rap remains undeniable. The RIAA recently recognized him as one of the most commercially successful rappers of the decade, highlighting his rare achievement of earning eight platinum albums within ten years. With his apparent release, he may now have the chance to extend that streak even further.

NBA Youngboy’s arraignment is set for July 1, at which time he will enter into a plea agreement. The rapper’s lawyers informed him that the state agreed to the bond only in exchange for waiving a preliminary hearing. Had he gone that route, the “Bandit” rapper, would’ve had to convince a judge that he had committed a crime.

“You’ll be brought over from the Cache County Jail assuming you’re still incarcerated,” the judge said according to court documents. Eventually, additional charges would be stacked on from Weber County — including a second-degree felony count of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person and two Class A misdemeanor counts of distributing a controlled substance.

Regarding the firearms charges NBA Youngboy faces in Baton Rogue, he is scheduled to appear at trial on July 1. He will appear in front of U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick. These firearm charges stem from a 2020 incident at a music video shoot of his. Additionally, officers arrested 15 other people present after police found several pistols and assault rifles hidden on the video set.

Originally, YoungBoy faced 27 months in prison, but his sentence was reduced by four months to 23 months. While not a drastic change, the reduction still offers some improvement, as four fewer months in prison is beneficial.

Despite his major success in the music industry, YoungBoy has faced ongoing legal troubles throughout his career. Logan District Judge Spencer Walsh handed down the original sentence. He expressed sympathy for the rapper, acknowledging how addiction can cause young people to lose their potential. “I’ve seen so many times where you have young men and women who have a lot of talent and potential. They can be robbed of that potential when they start to really struggle with their addictions. I don’t want that for you,” Judge Walsh said. He went on to encourage YoungBoy. He believes the rapper can have a successful future once his prison time is over. Originally, YoungBoy faced 27 months in prison, but his sentence has been reduced to 23 months. “I’m sure that in your future, once you’re done with your federal prison time, you can be really successful on federal probation and have a really bright future where you can reach your full potential in every aspect of your life. Best of luck to you, Mr. Gaulden.”

NBA YoungBoy’s Ongoing Legal Trouble

Last year, NBA YoungBoy spoke with Billboard about his life, fatherhood, and his ever-growing legal troubles. While most people would have hated being on home arrest, the rapper says it was the “best thing to ever happen” to him. His legal troubles have given him time to reflect and even venture into something new: Mormonism. “It was just cool to see someone with a different mindset that had nothing to do with business or money — just these wonderful souls,” he said. YB continues: “Even when my negative thoughts come back, when I do want to tell them, ‘Not today,’ I just don’t let nothing stop it.”

The rapper also opened up about how his music has influenced violence, and what he intends to do to change it. “I was set on being the greatest at what I did and what I spoke about,” he said. “Man, I was flooded with millions of dollars from the time I was 16 all the way to this point, and I woke up one morning like, ‘Damn. They got me. They made me do their dirty work.’ Man, look at the sh*t I put in these people’s ears.”

By pleading guilty as part of a broader deal, four felony charges were downgraded to misdemeanors, leaving him with a $25,000 fine and no additional jail time. YoungBoy’s decision to plead guilty to the federal gun charges stemmed from a 2020 incident where he was seen with a weapon during a music video shoot. Had he chosen to contest the charges in court, he risked a potential 10-year sentence. With his release now imminent, the rapper has an opportunity to turn his focus toward his music career and personal growth while on federal probation.

According to ABC4 News, the rapper (real name Kentrell DeSean Gaulden), who was apprehended by authorities last week on accusations of orchestrating a large-scale prescription fraud ring, has been scheduled for a hearing.

Utah’s First District Court has scheduled his pretrial release hearing for the morning of Monday, April 29, the outlet reports. And so, the 24-year-old has been stranded behind bars since the day of his arrest.

On Tuesday, April 16, Gaulden, who was under house arrest in Utah for unrelated charges, was arrested on a variety of charges, including pattern of unlawful activity, attempting to obtain drugs/prescriptions, identity fraud, forgery, possession of other controlled substances, and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person.

Jail records from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, no bail was set at the time of YoungBoy’s arrest.

The news follows closely after NBA YoungBoy caught a break in his federal gun charges.

Last month, the “Bitch Let’s Do It” rapper, indicted in 2021 for allegedly possessing two guns during a September 2020 incident in Baton Rouge, saw reprieve when the charges were suspended in March pending a Second Amendment ruling.

The incident in question, occurred during the arrest of 16 individuals on drug and firearm charges while filming a music video in an abandoned lot.

In July 2022, NBA YoungBoy walked away from charges of knowingly possessing a firearm during a California arrest, proving he can dodge more than just rhymes.

While confined to house arrest in Utah, he remained under the watchful eye of a security firm manned by military veterans. Last December, a federal judge greenlit mental health treatments but slammed the door on extra studio time, despite pleas that his record sales were taking hits from lockdown blues.

Nevertheless, he’s made the most of his time, dropping 13 albums, including collaborations with DaBaby and Quando Rondo.

As previously reported, on Monday, the rapper appeared in a Utah courtroom to finalize a plea agreement in his prescription drug fraud case.

Youngboy reportedly pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of identity fraud and two counts of forgery, both third-degree felonies, along with six misdemeanor counts of unlawful pharmacy conduct. As part of the deal, he will pay a $25,000 fine.

“Free all da fine sht [crying emojis],” wrote Sexyy Red following the report.

The rapper will avoid additional jail time. During the hearing, Judge Spencer Walsh of Logan District says “I’ve seen it many times,” Wash says in reference to the struggles many artists face with addiction. “Young men and women with a lot of promise can lose that promise when they battle addiction. I don’t want that for you.”

“Once you’re done with your federal time, you can be successful on probation and have a bright future ahead,” the judge said. “Best of luck to you, Mr. Gaulden.”
