Jamie Foxx is stepping back into dramatic territory with Fight For ’84, a new sports drama headed to Netflix.

The streamer announced the film during its Upfront presentation in New York, highlighting it as a major upcoming release. Foxx stars as a coach determined to rebuild the U.S. Olympic boxing team after a national tragedy. Colombian director Andrés Baiz (Narcos) is set to direct.

The film reimagines the aftermath of the 1980 plane crash that claimed the lives of the U.S. Olympic boxing team. Foxx plays a driven coach brought in to build a new squad from scratch. With the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics approaching, he must lead a group of young boxers to redemption and national glory. The rebuilt team ultimately secures a historic medal count, restoring pride to a grieving nation.

The screenplay comes from Oscar-nominated writers Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton), John Gatins (Flight), and Andy Weiss. Eric Newman (Narcos, Painkiller) produces under Grand Electric, joined by Bryan Unkeless of Night Owl. Foxx also serves as producer through A Move Films alongside Michael W. Abbott. Executive producers include Weiss, Henry Tillman, and Datari Turner.

Jamie Foxx’s growing relationship with Netflix includes recent appearances in the action-comedy Back In Action, co-starring Cameron Diaz, and his stand-up special What Had Happened Was…. Fight For ’84 marks a shift back toward the emotional depth that earned him acclaim in films like Ray and Ali.

Blending fact and fiction, the film draws on themes of grief, perseverance, and national healing. It explores the resilience of athletes rising from tragedy and the coach who guided them there. Foxx brings both emotional intensity and authenticity to a role rooted in loss, recovery, and legacy.

Production begins later this year. Fight For ’84 is already shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most talked-about dramatic releases.
