Florida Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna is stepping into one of hip hop’s most polarizing legal cases, urging California Governor Gavin Newsom to pardon Tory Lanez. The Canadian rapper is currently serving a 10-year sentence following his conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, was found guilty in December 2022 of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, illegal possession of a loaded gun, and gross negligence in firing the weapon. His sentencing in August 2023 set off waves of backlash from fans and supporters who believe the trial wasn’t handled fairly.
Luna added her voice to the conversation on social media, claiming the punishment was unjust. “I am calling on Gov. Newsom @CAgovernor to review Tory Lanez’s case and issue a pardon,” she wrote. “His 10-year sentence was based on flawed evidence, political pressure, and prosecutorial bias. Justice must be blind — not driven by headlines.” She ended the post with the demand: “Free Tory Lanez.”
Her statement aligns with growing efforts online to question the case. Some supporters believe Lanez was wrongfully blamed, pointing to alternate theories about who pulled the trigger. One notable claim came from bodyguard Bradley James. He alleged that Megan’s former friend and assistant, Kelsey Harris, confessed to firing the gun herself.
The campaign to free Lanez has picked up steam. Petitions have gained thousands of signatures. Big names in music have also shown support. Drake recently shared a message on Instagram that read “Come home soon,” alongside a link to a Change.org petition titled “Pardon Tory Lanez.”
As of now, Governor Newsom hasn’t addressed Luna’s request publicly. Still, her involvement brings a new political angle to the case. It continues to spark strong reactions from both fans and critics.
