Drake is fully locked in as he builds momentum for his next solo album, and according to those closest to him, he’s making music every chance he gets. OVO artist Smiley shared just how focused the Toronto rapper has been lately. “Even at the ‘Nokia’ video shoot, during a break, he had a bunch of producers and he was just recording. He’s in that crazy mode, right now,” Smiley said during a livestream.
Smiley also recalled a recent party where Drake ditched the festivities to dive back into his creative zone. “We’re at a party and he was in the other room by himself eating pasta with wired headphones writing music while we have a whole fucking party going on,” he said. “He’s on a different mode right now.”
During a stream with Adin Ross, Drake confirmed what many fans have been hoping for. He revealed that he’s hard at work on a new project. “Working on a new album right now,” he said. “It’s a slap.” He also emphasized that this will be a solo effort, no joint collaborations this time around.
But while he’s been locked in the studio, Drake is also dealing with major legal tensions. He recently updated his lawsuit against Universal Music Group, claiming the label played a role in defaming him by backing Kendrick Lamar’s hit diss track, “Not Like Us.” Drake’s legal team argues that Kendrick’s decision to censor a controversial lyric during the Super Bowl performance speaks volumes. They believe it further proves the damage done to Drake’s reputation.
UMG didn’t take long to fire back, calling the lawsuit “reckless” and warning that Drake himself could be pulled into discovery. Still, his spokesperson was unfazed: “Drake welcomes discovery and has nothing to hide… It’s UMG’s current leadership who should be nervous.”
