Denzel Washington appeared unfazed after what seemed to be a tense moment on the red carpet at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
A now-viral video shows the two-time Oscar winner in a brief exchange with a photographer during the world premiere of Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest. While the cause of the disagreement remains unclear, the incident didn’t overshadow Washington’s presence at the event.
A representative for the 70-year-old actor told E! News on May 20, “It was a great evening.”
Later that evening, Washington was all smiles when he was surprised with an honorary Palme d’Or award, given to him by Spike Lee.
“This is a total surprise for me, so I’m emotional. It’s a great opportunity to collaborate with my brother once again, brother from another mother, and to be here once again in Cannes,” he says as he fought back tears. “We’re a very privileged group in this room that we get to make movies and wear tuxedos and nice clothes and dress up and get paid for it as well.”
“We’re just blessed beyond measure,” he added. “I’m blessed beyond measure. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.”
